Two days before Weston’s birthday, his friends all bailed on him. The news had bummed him out bad, but I was ecstatic.

With Weston’s friends out of the picture, I could plan something romantic for his birthday. What that would be, I had no clue. I decided to take a leap and make it big, expensive, something that would remind Weston that I was well worth a dozen of his no-show Ivy League frat brothers.

Worrying about Weston’s birthday, I let other things slip. My tutor had spent the day figuring out my class schedule for the next term. She’d managed to salvage my grade by finding some nerdy blonde to take my finals for me. I also had to deal with another probation notice from the sorority—this time, it wasn’t my grades but missing service hours. The notice had been signed by Camilla, a fucking heart over the “i” in her name. I had almost missed both my waxing and mani-pedi appointments.

I told myself the recent lapses were the worries of a diligent girlfriend amid the obligations of sorority life, but I knew why my head was all jumbled. On the car ride to the salon that day, I had spotted a shirtless college boy crossing the street, clad only in loose gym shorts, his core muscles rippling in beautiful concert, and my hands clenched the steering wheel so hard I was sure it would disconnect with an electric snap and smack me in the forehead. I imagined pulling alongside him, rolling down the window, and offering him a ride to his apartment or dormitory, then veering off course, finding the nearest restaurant alley, and taking a blade to his stomach, watching his skin as it relented to sharp metal.

Daydreams like these were what kept me going during the days when Weston was working, and I found myself driving down deserted streets. Who else thought about what they might get away with? There was a brawl in the middle of a biolab, an assault on a campus security guard the day before that. Every time I saw a vulnerable boy on the street, I repeated to myself that Weston was enough.
