I followed a step behind, uncertain of where I belonged or what I was supposed to do.

“It wasn’t me,” a familiar voice insisted.

Over Grace’s shoulder, I saw Colette Kampen glaring at Jacob Siffen with the kind of contempt that only a teenage girl can muster. “You can’t keep me here. I know my rights.”

“Colette,” I gasped when I saw her hands were cuffed behind her back. Her brother, Mark, had been Henry’s best friend all through their school years. Between a lifetime’s worth of pick-ups and drop-offs, I’d watched Colette and her sister Naomi grow up. When Mark had been arrested for Heath Burton’s murder, the sisters had stayed with me since their mother had recently passed away.

Hearing her name, she turned. “Mrs. Long?” Her eyes locked on mine, and I could see that behind her high school know-it-all bluster, she was frightened.

Wanting to protect the scared little girl I saw, I rushed forward. “Let her go!”

Siffen jumped between us, roaring, “Mind your own business!”

Startled, I skidded to a halt.

“What’s going on?” Grace interjected, grabbing my elbow.

“I didn’t do it, Mrs. Long,” Colette said desperately. “Tell them!”

“Seriously, Siffen,” Grace muttered. “What are you doing?”

“Arresting her,” he growled back.

“For what?” I asked.

“None of your business,” he taunted.

“Vandalism,” Colette supplied. “He says I spray-painted Doctor Rochon’s car, but I didn’t do it.”

I believed her. Mostly because she’s always been the prissiest princess of a girl, and I couldn’t imagine her doing anything that could result in getting dirty.

“You’ll have your day in court,” Siffen told her. “You can explain how I just caught you next door, red-handed with the can of paint.”

“I told you!” She stomped her foot childishly. “I picked it up to throw it in the trash. My mom always said, ‘Take pride in keeping Pride Falls clean’.” Her voice cracked when she quoted her mother.

“Tell it to the judge!” Siffen spat.

“Are you planning on keeping her cuffed until then?” Grace asked, moving behind the girl.

“Not your case, so stay out of it,” the other deputy shouted. “Don’t touch her! She’s my prisoner!”

“Mrs. Long!” Colette begged tearfully. “Help me!”

I hesitated, unsure of what to do. “It’s going to be okay, Colette.”

“You can’t—” Grace began to tell Jacob.

“I can, and I will,” the other deputy countered forcefully.

Tears filling her eyes as she stared at me, Colette wailed, “Please help me!”

“Shut up!” Siffen shouted.

“Don’t tell her to—” I railed, charging toward him.

“Quiet!” The sheriff’s bellowed command stopped me in my tracks.

I gulped as I looked toward him.

Hands on his hips, Rockland surveyed the chaos with disapproval. Just behind him, Deputy Balentine looked angry.

“Deputy Bailey,” the sheriff said in a deceptively quiet voice. “Please remove the restraints from the young lady.”

“But—” Siffen began. His protest died on his lips at the look his boss shot him.

“What were you even doing next door?” Rockland asked, making it clear he’d heard the majority of the argument.

“Taking my break,” the deputy replied petulantly.

Grace freed Colette, who immediately launched herself into my arms.

“Shhh,” I whispered into her hair as she began to softly sob.
