We have to be clear and tell parents about the challenges ahead. We need to be cheerleaders on the sidelines saying, “You can do it. It’s going to get more complicated, but you’re going to gain experience every day. You’re going to be up to the challenge of managing kids and dogs. We know that you love Buddy. Learning how to set him up for success with your kids is one of the kindest things you can do for him. That way he’ll know that you are always there to help if he needs it.”

We have to do it in a way that does not sound as if we are suggesting they have a bad kid or a bad dog, but doing that is harder than it sounds. Parents are very sensitive to anyone implying that they aren’t doing a good job. If we make the parents defensive, they won’t listen.
