Tiredly, she tromped to her trailer. Her door was unlocked. She should probably be concerned over that, but she lacked the energy. There was someone in her bed, but on closer inspection it turned out to be a sleeping Beau. She climbed into the tiny bed beside him and gave him a push toward the wall.

“Shove over, Goldilocks.”

He answered with a grunt and a moment later she was asleep.

When she woke, a looming form hovered close above her, an inch from her face. Instinctively, her hand shot out and gave a hard jab to the solar plexus. With a puff of surprise, the person collapsed on top of her. She shoved and rolled to the side, dumping Beau unceremoniously onto the floor.

“What were you doing?” she asked, her chest heaving with unused adrenaline. She almost hoped he returned for another round. After her meeting with Mr. Goldberg, she could use a good fight.

“Climbing over you to get out,” he said. Groaning, he rolled from side to side as if in pain, though she thought he was hamming it up. She hadn’t hit him that hard, and it was a short drop from the bed to the floor.

“Why?” she asked.

“Because unless you want me to put on a diaper, I occasionally need to use the bathroom. I was trying not to wake you. Kill me if I ever attempt to be a gentleman again. No, wait, I’d better take that back or you actually will try to kill me.”

“You’re kind of a baby,” she said. Pillowing her head on her hand, she stared down at him. “You’re one of those men who can take a bullet but falls apart at the first sign of a cold, aren’t you?”

“You know when’s the best time to insult a man’s toughness? After you damage his internal organs and give him a concussion,” he said. “Dad blame, that hurt.”

“Do they teach you those colorful phrases in spy school?” she asked. “Like, ‘Rule 497: If you ever get captured by the Russians, you should spout a bunch of nonsensical hillbilly words to confuse them.’”

“No, but my grandfather taught me never to curse around a lady, although you are mightily stretching the definition of that word,” he said.

Sadie gave him a genuine smile. Outside of Luke, she hadn’t been confronted with many legitimate gentlemen in her life. The smile seemed to annoy him further. His frown deepened to a scowl.

“Keep doing that and your face is going to freeze that way,” she said. “Never mind, too late.”

“What did Goldberg want?” he asked.

“To threaten me into finding Chiffon,” Sadie said.

“Define threaten,” he said.

“It wasn’t implied so much as said that if I don’t find her, soon no one will be able to find me,” she said.

Beau snorted a laugh. “Good luck. Someone should warn him you’re unkillable, like Rasputin.”

“Aw, Beau, you say the sweetest things.”

There was a light tap on the door. “Come in,” Sadie called. The door was opened by Mary.

“Is this a bad time?” Mary asked, her eyes falling questioningly to Beau.
