B en and Addy parked in front of the mansion and she looked at it with dread, saying nothing. They both got out of the car and walked toward the guest house, both anxious to see Bree and Jennifer. When they arrived at the front door, there was a note taped to it. Ben glanced at Addy and removed it.

“It’s from Brandon,” Ben said. “He is asking us to go to the mansion.”

“I don’t think I can after all that I found out today,” Addy answered, with a heavy sigh.

“Well, we need to because maybe they’ve found something, and this nightmare might be ending,” Ben said.

Ben went into the guest house long enough to lay the folder on a desk and notice Bree and Jennifer were not there, then they headed toward the mansion. Addy was clutching Ben’s hand so tightly it was almost uncomfortable. He looked at her and saw the stress in her eyes and realized that she was not even aware of it. They came to the front door, but before they could open it, Brandon was already standing inside waiting for them, his expression grave. He motioned for them to come inside.

“What is it?” Addy asked, concerned.

Brandon escorted them to the playroom where they found Bree sleeping in Sagi’s lap. Addy looked around nervously for Jennifer, but she was nowhere in sight.

“Sit down please,” Brandon instructed them. The little chairs from the round table had already been positioned in a circle so they could all be together. Ben and Addy both sat, glancing at each other, Addy more frightened than she had been for days. Sagi rubbed Bree’s hair gently, and Addy noticed that Bree had been crying. She looked up at Brandon, ready for answers. Brandon sat across from her and took her hands.

“Jennifer’s dead,” Brandon said, almost in a whisper, then his eyes pooled with tears.

Addy sat speechless, looking around at all of the faces, hoping it was some terrible mistake.

“When? How?” Ben asked.

“Let me tell them, Brandon,” Sagi said, realizing how emotional Brandon was becoming. “Brandon and I were in the west wing setting up the last of the equipment. We heard a laugh and smelled smoke somewhere close so we went investigating, trying to get that nasty spirit to show himself. Jennifer and Bree had come into the house, but we were so preoccupied with trying to get that brute to appear, we didn’t even sense their presence. I know now it was a setup. When we heard the screaming, we ran into the east wing hall and saw the spirit shrouded in smoke, and he had already pushed Bree down the stairs. He had killed Jennifer by then, and he was headed for Bree. Brandon and I yelled for him to stop and we must have surprised him because he disappeared, along with the smoke. We knew Jennifer was dead right away. Her neck was broken.”

Addy was crying, her head on Ben’s shoulder, and Ben was searching Sagi’s face for more answers.
