Four

WORLD WAR II AND THE

POSTWAR PERIOD

After the United States entered World War II in December 1941, the island saw a huge influx of military personnel and contractors, swelling in the war years to approximately 10,000. Suddenly, sailors flocked to Duval Street day and night. One Navy report noted that the street was “a wide-open honky-tonk area, studded with bars and so-called night clubs of fairly tawdry character.” (Courtesy of Monroe County Library, Key West.)

Even before America entered the war, the US Navy’s presence in Key West was growing. Duval Street, with its many restaurants and bars, like the Bahama Bar (down the street on the right), became a magnet for soldiers and sailors who were far from home.
