SUMMARY
The gateway hypothesis suggests that the use of soft drugs, particularly cannabis, can cause a progression to the use of hard drugs, such as opiates and cocaine, which have increased risks of harm and dependency. This proposed progression can be the result of the pharmacological effects of the drug with a biological change in brain functioning causing a propensity to increased drug use, or the result of drug market characteristics which result in easier access to a wider range of street drugs. Critics suggest that while there are associations between the use of different drugs, there is no causal relationship. For example, reasons for a propensity towards (any) drug use can include personality, family background, peer influences and particularly social and economic problems, which may result in associations between use of different drugs, whereas reasons for patterns of initiation from earlier cannabis use to later use of opiates and cocaine can relate to access and availability issues.
