Chapter Eight

DEXTER

I breathe easier once she starts working on her phone when I’ve got her in the car. She’s not watching out the windows and she’s focused on what she’s doing. It might take a little while for her to realize what’s going on. If I’m lucky we’ll be well out of the city.

I watch her out of the corner of my eye while she works, fascinated by her beauty. The delicate lines of her perfect face. The soft green gaze that’s sharp and so damn intelligent that it cuts through all my bullshit. Her dainty nose lightly kissed with freckles along the bridge and the high cheekbones that are subtly tinged with the barest tinge of pink.

She’s so damn beautiful that it takes my breath away. She thinks it’s crazy that I want her but I’d have to be dead and blind not to. Her lush breasts push against the silky evergreen blouse, hinting at the treasure hidden behind it. Her ass when she got into the car was enough to make a grown man weep. So rounded and curvaceous. I’ve wanted to spank that ass since I first saw her. Or take a bite out of it. I’m a sick caveman bastard every time I see her. Barely able to control all my impulses when she’s near.

The spicy floral scent that she wears lingers in the car, trailing over to me. I drag it into my lungs like pure oxygen, closing my eyes and fighting the moan that wants to break free.

She tends to get lost in the work and so I’m not surprised when she looks up after an hour and glances out the window, her brows lifting when she sees the open road and the peaks of mountains in the distance.

Her eyes drag back to me and she glares wildly at me. “Where the hell are we, Dexter?”

Considering the laser brightness of her eyes I’m not going to crow that she finally called me Dexter.

“We’re on our way to my cabin in Lost Hills.”

“Have you lost your mind?” She screeches, vibrating with rage. “We have work to do. And I did not agree to go out of town with you. Who the hell do you think you are?”

Wincing, I try to keep my head. I hold up my hand. “Now hold on, Daisy, sweetheart…”

“Don’t fucking call me sweetheart,” she growls. “I absolutely refuse to let you call me that.”

“Fine. Daisy, I have a friend who’s on the police force. He and his partner were keeping an eye on your ex. Unfortunately, we think he made them and he snuck out of his hotel room last night. We don’t have a clue where he is and we decided it would be better if you went underground for a little bit. Just for awhile. Until we figure out where he is.”

She sits up straight and I swear it looks like her back could break, she’s so stiff. “You shouldn’t have decided all that stuff without me being involved. I’m the party that could be hurt here.
