Cam sat beside the glimmering water of his family swimming pool. It was on a late Saturday afternoon. He held a glass of plain lemonade in one hand and an unread thriller in the other. His body was tanned from many days in the sun. He was sleepy, lethargic, uninterested in the world around him. The pool had become his refuge this summer as he tried to get over the time he and Aimee had spent there together.
When he looked up from his stupor, he saw a mirage walking down the steps from the upper deck. She wore a red and white flowered sundress that flowed around her bare legs. Sunlight glinted off her hair.
He sat up. âAimee?â
She came toward him. âHi, Cam.â
There was something different about her. A new confidence. A glow of something he couldnât understand.
Slowly, he placed his glass down beside his chair. He dropped his book and stood up letting her walk around the pool toward him, letting her come to him.
âAimee?â
Her footsteps faltered. She gave him a tentative smile. âIâm not a ghost.â
âWhat does this mean?â A thrill rippled across his skin. Dare he hope for a happy ending?
âIt means your brother let me in. Hank, I think he said his name was.â
Hank let her in? Without saying anything stupid or rude? He couldnât believe it any more than he could believe he saw her standing there.
He reached out a shaky hand and touched her cheek. She shut her eyes, leaning into his palm. A smile played across her lips.
âAimee?â he whispered.
She opened her eyes. Her eyes brightened as they sought his. âMy father told me about the contract.â
He blinked, having trouble focusing, unable to speak.
âMy father also gave me his blessing.â
âFor what?â
âTo marry you, of course. That is, if youâre really serious about what you said in June.â
His heart gave a sharp jerk in his chest. âSerious? On my life I was serious.â
âDo you want to work on a relationship and see where it goes? Do you want to try again?â she asked him, shooting him a loving look.
âIâve never wanted anything more in my whole life.â
Cam kissed her then, and she returned his kiss. The sunshine beat down upon his head as Aimee circled his neck with her arms. She pressed her body against his.
This couldnât be true. This couldnât be happening. Aimee Elliott had come back to him.
Sheâd come home.
And he was damn sure heâd never let her get away again.
