Chapter Sixteen

The Necklace

When Eliza went into Transposition the next day, Melissa Sweet took the place next to her. Eliza braced herself for the irritatingly cheerful “Good morning!” with which Melissa usually greeted her. It was a surprise, therefore, to hear nothing but a thump as Melissa fell into her seat.

“Hey, are you OK?” asked Eliza, in spite of herself.

Melissa appeared surprised to see her. “Oh yes, thank you. I’ve just lost something that was special to me. I’m sure it’ll turn up though...”

Eliza’s eyebrows shot up. “Something important to you... something you used to create magic?”

Melissa appeared to be hearing her from far away. “Oh no, nothing like that. Just a necklace I’ve had since I was little. It was my great-grandmother’s. I’ve never taken it off.” She gazed at the stained-glass window while her finger played around the hollow of her neck.

“How did you lose it if you never take it off?”

“That’s the thing that worries me,” murmured Melissa. Professor Neach entered the room and the class settled down. “I know I had it on when I went to bed last night. But when I woke up this morning—it was gone. I pulled off my sheets and my pillowcase and searched everywhere but it’s not in my room.” She looked at Eliza with watery eyes, “Someone took it from my neck while I was asleep,” Melissa whispered fearfully.

A shiver went down Eliza’s spine. Two lost objects in as many days. But what purpose could someone have of a talisman and a necklace?

The girls were silent for the rest of the lesson. This week’s session involved focus and attention. They were learning to move objects from one side of the room to the other, with increasing difficulty. Melissa was usually more adept at this type of magic, but today Eliza had progressed to moving a tray complete with teacups, saucers, and a teapot filled with hot water through the air using only the focus of her mind. Meanwhile, Melissa had not even managed to send an inflated balloon across the room. The balloon did travel a few feet toward the other end of the classroom by the end of the lesson, but Eliza was sure she saw Melissa give it a hard flick. As they were packing up, Eliza grasped Melissa’s shoulder firmly in what she hoped was an encouraging way. It was with heavy heart that she left Melissa in the classroom where she continued to frown in concentration at the balloon which bounced tauntingly on the classroom floor.

Eliza was dodging her way through a crowd of students gathered by the exit and accidentally walked straight into a tall, broad back. “Eliza,” said Professor Kent, looking around in surprise.

“Sorry, I got jostled by the crowd.”

“Not to worry, I was wanting a word with you anyway,” he said good naturedly. “I wondered whether you’ve managed to identify your parents, or have you lost interest in that particular hobby?”

Eliza hesitated for a moment, then gestured Professor Kent to follow her into an empty classroom.
