Chapter 11 – Where’s Your Watch?

Burke cut the power about 40 yards from Kensie’s GPS waypoint, remaining far enough away from the site of the artifacts so that a heavy anchor was unlikely to land on anything important. Once she’d gotten at least her temporary fill of the sight, feel, and smell of her man, Kensie had spent the last hour going over tides and charts in the cabin until she came up with a plan that she felt would maximize their chances of success.

“So, what I’m going to do,” she told Burke as he set up on the anchors, “is work east, in the direction where the artifacts got lighter, but I’m not gonna dig them up one-by-one – we don’t have the time. I’m going to find the edge of the debris field and then start investigating the most likely returns.”

Burke nodded. “Still sounds like a lot of ground to cover. It might not be possible.”

“It might not be, but if you’ve got a better plan, I’m all ears.”

Burke shrugged; obviously, he did not. “I’m more worried about having additional visitors today. I doubt I’ll be able to scare them off with an unloaded shotgun this time.” He looked grim.

“Well, maybe you should load it,” Kensie responded, trying to lighten the mood a bit. He was far sexier as the devil-may-care swashbuckler than the brooding worrier.

“It already is,” he told her, exasperation creeping into his voice. “You know what I mean.”

“Yeah, I do. What’s your plan?”

Burke killed the engine and watched the anchor chains while he spoke. “I think the same as yesterday. Unless they have radar, no one followed us out here, but that doesn’t mean much since they know where we’ll be. If someone comes roaring up, you’ll have a little over five minutes at best, depending on how fast the other boat is. I’ve already got a quick-release on the anchor, so I can be moving pretty quick – long before you get to the surface. So be ready to come up if I see something.”

“Five minutes,” Kensie mused. That didn’t give her much time for her safety stop during her ascension.

“I know. I don’t like it but I can’t leave you down there and Empire, as you’ve observed, ain’t exactly the fastest boat around.”

“All right,” she responded. Like Burke said, it wasn’t a very graceful solution, but she would do her best to minimize the ascent time. “Let’s get to it.”

A few minutes later Kensie was in her diving equipment and ready to go. Burke stopped her just as she was pulling the dive mask down, giving her a quick but intimate kiss. “For luck,” he explained.

“Thanks. I’ll take all the help I can get.” Haven’t I been lucky enough on this trip? Maybe she had, but right now she was being greedy. She pulled her mask in place and splashed into the sea.

Kensie got her bearings rapidly and swam to the furthest contact she’d found before moving forward once again. The detector chirped dutifully upon every hit, and with each sound she marked another waypoint.
