CHAPTER seventeen
For Kenna, the pattern she established since Paul had been found continued. Every day, she would hit the hospital by seven AM, when she knew the doctors were most likely to be making rounds. No one ever questioned her being there, and she silently thanked Paul for making her his emergency contact and medical power-of-attorney. She was given a report every day and consulted before any decisions were made.
After she talked to whichever doctors had something to say that morning, sheâd sit in that same chair, watching him, holding his hand.
Absorbing the antiseptic smells and the cacophony of sounds that made up the everyday life of the ICU.
Telling him what she learned - or more days than not, what she hadnât learned. Talking about everything and nothing.
Usually once a day sheâd pop out to check on what little she could find regarding Cindyâs missing boyfriend, and then circle right back to the hospital.
Of all the doctors, sheâd quickly grown to hate the neurologist. She hated everything about him from his receding hairline and sagging jowls to the expressionless tone of his voice. Everyone else seemed very upbeat about Paulâs progress. The orthopedist, Dr. Starry, the nurses - especially Rudy. The neurologist, on the other hand, couldnât give her any idea of when he might wake up. What, if any brain damage there might be when he did. And he never let her forget there was a chance that Paul would never wake up at all. Theyâd started to reduce the medication that was keeping him in a coma, but so far, there was no change.
This morning it had been too much to take. Another equally pessimistic assessment from the neurologist left her feeling as though a fist was wrapped tightly around her heart. She held it together until the hated doctor left the room, then carefully wrapped her hand around Paulâs arm, in a spot where she wouldnât dislodge any monitors, rested her forehead on his arm and sniffled in a brave attempt not to break down. Sheâd promised herself she wouldnât cry in front of him, that sheâd be strong and positive, but today all she wanted to do was let loose and sob until it didnât hurt anymore.
âDonât you dare leave me.â Tears burned tracks down her cheeks. âPlease, Paul. Donât leave me. Even if Iâm not good at saying it, you know I love you. And everyone Iâve ever loved has left me. My parents. Mike. I couldnât take it if I lost you too.â
She sensed, rather than saw, Rudy come into the room. She quickly sat up, pushed her hair behind her ears, and wiped both hands across her eyes. âHey, Rudy.â
âYou donât have to pretend to be some kind of hero around me. You have every right to cry if thatâs what you need to do.â He checked Paulâs pulse. âI know the doctors arenât saying so, especially Doctor Doom and Gloom, but I feel really good about how heâs doing.â He squatted down so he was looking directly into her eyes and squeezed her hand.
