Chapter Thirteen
When Claire arrived at Davidâs Bridal for her one-thirty appointment, she wasnât surprised to find Theoâs car already parked close to the front door. Today was the final fitting for their dresses. It had only taken two shopping trips for Theo to find what she wanted. Instead of a traditional wedding gown, she chose an ivory princess-style dress that fell to just above the knees. Claireâs was identical except for the color, which was a warm coral. Theo said it did great things for her skin. Claire pointed out that no one would be looking at the maid of honor.
Theo wasnât in the fitting rooms. She was in the shoe department. By the number of open boxes and tissue paper scattered on the floor around her, sheâd been there for some time.
Claire moved a stack of boxes off the chair next to Theo and sat down. âHaving fun?â
âAs the owner of at least thirty pairs of shoes, you should know the answer to that.â Theo pointed to the silver sandals on her feet. âWhat do you think of these?â
âI like them. Theyâre classy and elegant. The rhinestone-covered straps are a nice touch.â
âThe heels are just the right height, too. I wonât fall over walking down the aisle. Letâs see how they look with our dresses.â
The session with the seamstress didnât take long. As the two women stood alone in front of the three-way mirror, Claire was aware of a myriad of seemingly contradictory emotions. She felt happy, sentimental, wistful, and sad, all at the same time. The friendship that had been so much a part of her teenage and adult years was entering a new phase, one that would take her and Theo in different directions. It didnât mean their paths wouldnât converge from time to time, but never again would they run parallel.
This was the part of life Claire had a hard time with. She didnât like when things changed. There was safety and comfort in the familiar flow of events and knowing her place in them. But the seasons of life arenât like the seasons found in nature. They donât follow the same pattern year in and year out. You can try to be prepared, but thereâs no way to predict exactly how certain events and situations will play out. The only thing you can really count on in life is that itâs constantly evolving.
She blinked away the tears in her eyes before the observant Theo could spot them. âRemember when we used to sit in the gym during P.E. and talk about our future.â
Theo laughed. âMy high school self would be disappointed. I didnât graduate from MIT or revolutionize the tech industry with a killer app.â
âThatâs okay. Iâm not working at NASA either.â
âWe got one thing right. Weâre still best friends. We also solved the dresses and shoes problem, but what about my hair?â Theo lifted one of the frizzy curls hanging over her forehead. âI look like Raggedy Ann.â
âI donât recommend you cut it off like I did.
