CHAPTER 11
Jessica and I, along with Constables Jenner and Kassian, made our way from the Detachment to a quaint side road which meandered along the shores of the Pigeon River. We inched down the road, as not to raise suspicion of Dryden should he be on the premises. We were fortunate enough where he was not at home when we pulled up to the residence. I was amazed at the appearance of the dwelling. Its outer walls were constructed in a cordwood-style; however, unlike most houses built in this style, there were corners to the structure. Therefore, the cordwood was cross hatched to maintain the integrity of the structure.
The Constables, my partner, and I got out of our vehicles, and decided to investigate the premises. Jenner and Kassian went inside Dryden's home, while Detective Amerson and I went to check out the detached garage towards the rear of the property; all the while we kept in constant radio contact with one another. Jessica and I cautiously proceeded to the structure which looked like a small arched enclosure. We checked the garage to see if there was an entrance other than the main door, but were unable to locate one. The main door was closed and padlocked.
"Any luck, Celdom?" Kassian queried.
"It appears the garage is secured," I informed. "What about you guys?"
"If we didn't know the rap sheet on Dryden already, I'd say he's a gun collector. There are a couple rifles crossed over his fireplace."
"Stay safe, Constable. We don't know if or when he's going to show up."
"Roger that. Any idea about how to get past your barrier?"
I cocked my revolver. "I think I have a solution." I shot a couple bullets into the padlock in a bid to blow it open. My volley turned out to be successful, as the restraint broke in two. I warned my partner, "Careful, Amerson. We don't know if this structure is booby-trapped."
Jessica nodded, and stood flush against the side wall to the structure. I rolled up the door, and revealed a huge stash of merchandise being stowed away. "Jackpot," I announced.
"What's going on, Celdom?" Kassian asked. "We heard a shot from outside."
"We found a nice cache of stolen wares in here," I responded. "I think we have enough evidence here to make some of these charges stick."
"Let me get some photos of this, Celdom," Jessica requested, as she pulled out her smartphone. "We'll need some proof, in the event Dryden decides to unload any of this before we arrest him."
"Good idea, Amerson. I'll keep an eye and ear out in case Dryden shows up."
Jessica started snapping away while I stood guard by the opened garage door. I maintained radio contact with Kassian and Jenner as they continued to investigate inside the house. Ten minutes later, I heard a vehicle headed down the side road. In a bid not to rouse suspicion, I stepped inside the garage, and pulled the door down behind me.
Jessica complained about the lack of natural light. "What the hell, Celdom?" she argued.
