Renton smiled. “That was very smart.”

My eyes widened. “What?”

“Why, casting a spell to keep your lover away, of course,” he said easily. “Very smart, indeed.”

“Okay, so you know Shawn isn’t coming. Now, tell me what you want me to do,” I demanded.

“I don’t want you to do anything, Ms. Samms. I just want you to relinquish your powers.”

Chapter Eleven

Shawn

“Where are you, Amy?” My mind raced with the possibilities.

Somehow, she was just gone. I’d felt it the minute our connection was broken. It was as if someone had just severed it.

I’d felt a sharp pain in my gut.

I spun my car around in the middle of the street and went back to the hospital parking lot. The employee-parking slot she’d been in was now empty.

Quickly, I dialed Geoff. I needed to see if either of Amy’s sisters had sensed anything. He answered on the first ring. “Geoff, Amy is missing. Can you ask Amber if she’s either heard from her or felt anything?” I asked quickly.

“Damn,” Geoff muttered. “Hold on a sec. She’s downstairs.”

“Hurry, Geoff,” I said.

I could hear him running down the stairs. Then, I heard their voices, though I couldn’t make out the words. Just when I was getting ready to scream into the phone, Geoff was back on the line.

“She hasn’t sensed anything, Shawn. And she doesn’t sense her, either. So, maybe that is a good thing? I mean, the spell is supposed to make them know when one is in danger, right”

Of course, Geoff didn’t know very much about magick. That was the intent of the spell, of course, but it could have been compromised by a stronger spell. “I hope so, Geoff. Tell Amber to call me if she finds anything out.”

“Do you want me to help you search for her?”

As much as I’d have appreciated the help, I knew that Amy would never forgive me if something happened to Amber. “No, stay with Amber. Stay close, Geoff. This man that I think has Amy is a doctor at her hospital. Don’t trust anyone.”

“Roger that,” Geoff said. “I’ll call Topaz and Ryan. You just concentrate on finding Amy.”

“Yeah, thanks. See if Amber and Paz can talk with their familiars, too. Can’t hurt.” Sometimes, a familiar could also sense danger to their witch.

A spell could have blocked the sisters and him, perhaps, but the feline familiars were harder to fool.

“I’ll get back to you,” Geoff promised, and disconnected the call.

I ran an impatient hand through my hair. I needed information. First, I needed to find out as much as I could about this Renton. I called my aunt. If anyone knew something, I prayed it would be her. Technically, Amy wasn’t family yet. She might have sensed something.

“Someone has her,” Melissa said by way of greeting.

Shawn clenched his fist. “I think so, yes.”

“I know so,” Melissa said very softly. “But I can’t see his face for some reason. Do you know who it is?”

“Some doctor from the hospital…name of Renton. Steele Renton.”

I could almost hear Melissa’s mind whirling.
