I heard a knock at my back door, and I jumped down off the ladder to answer it. I prayed that it was Kari. Iâd left her alone like sheâd asked even though it was killing me. Iâd barely slept in three days, and I was damn near useless at work, but I was trying my hardest to trudge along.
Iâd finally talked to my brother and arranged for a few days off so I could get my head together. Iâd spent two hours with my therapist this morning, and I was in an okay place now.
Okay. Not great, but not underwater. Just acceptable.
If only I could see her. Short of sitting on my front porch trying to catch a glimpse of her as she drove to work in the morning, I didnât really have a way to do that. Iâd been so worried about her. Iâd caught myself staring toward her house again and again.
I threw the door open and felt my face fall when I saw Jace Duke on my porch.
âWell, itâs nice to see you too,â Jace quipped.
âSorry, I was expecting someone else. Whatâs up?â I held the door open for him, and he walked past me into the house.
âIs Kari around? I know sheâs been spending a lot of time over here helping you put the house back together. â
âNo, sheâs probably at work,â I told him as I glanced at the clock on the stove. âSheâs probably been there for an hour or more already.â
âWell, she didnât show up, and Sarahâs worried about her. She called in sick on Tuesday with a stomach bug and then again yesterday. Sarah hasnât heard from her yet this morning, and they had some big meeting planned.â
âDid you call her?â I asked Jace as I glanced out the window toward Kariâs house. Iâd seen her lights on when I went to bed last night.
âYeah, about a million times. Goes straight to voicemail. Sheâs not answering the door, and since we changed her locks, I donât have a key.â
âFuck,â I swore.
âWhen was the last time you saw her?â
âMonday night. We argued,â I admitted. âShe told me she didnât want to see or hear from me again, so Iâve been avoiding her.â
âYou argued?â Jaceâs eyebrows went up and he flipped from worried big brother to irritated big brother. âWhat did you argue about?â
âIâve been trying to get her to see someone about some things, and she got upset with me.â
âWhat someone? Which things?â
âShe needs help, Jace. I donât know how you guys canât fucking see it. Sheâs drowning right in front of us.â
âWhat the hell are you talking about? Sheâs fine.â
âShe is not fucking fine!â I roared.
âExcuse me?â Jace growled.
âShe doesnât ever fucking sleep, Jace, and when she does, she wakes up screaming from her nightmares. Sheâs back in Dallas all over again, bleeding on those steps, and not a goddamn one of you is there to pick her up! She wonât think about it or talk about it. It just festers inside her like a cancer thatâs eating her alive.
