I heard a knock at my back door, and I jumped down off the ladder to answer it. I prayed that it was Kari. I’d left her alone like she’d asked even though it was killing me. I’d barely slept in three days, and I was damn near useless at work, but I was trying my hardest to trudge along.

I’d finally talked to my brother and arranged for a few days off so I could get my head together. I’d spent two hours with my therapist this morning, and I was in an okay place now.

Okay. Not great, but not underwater. Just acceptable.

If only I could see her. Short of sitting on my front porch trying to catch a glimpse of her as she drove to work in the morning, I didn’t really have a way to do that. I’d been so worried about her. I’d caught myself staring toward her house again and again.

I threw the door open and felt my face fall when I saw Jace Duke on my porch.

“Well, it’s nice to see you too,” Jace quipped.

“Sorry, I was expecting someone else. What’s up?” I held the door open for him, and he walked past me into the house.

“Is Kari around? I know she’s been spending a lot of time over here helping you put the house back together. ”

“No, she’s probably at work,” I told him as I glanced at the clock on the stove. “She’s probably been there for an hour or more already.”

“Well, she didn’t show up, and Sarah’s worried about her. She called in sick on Tuesday with a stomach bug and then again yesterday. Sarah hasn’t heard from her yet this morning, and they had some big meeting planned.”

“Did you call her?” I asked Jace as I glanced out the window toward Kari’s house. I’d seen her lights on when I went to bed last night.

“Yeah, about a million times. Goes straight to voicemail. She’s not answering the door, and since we changed her locks, I don’t have a key.”

“Fuck,” I swore.

“When was the last time you saw her?”

“Monday night. We argued,” I admitted. “She told me she didn’t want to see or hear from me again, so I’ve been avoiding her.”

“You argued?” Jace’s eyebrows went up and he flipped from worried big brother to irritated big brother. “What did you argue about?”

“I’ve been trying to get her to see someone about some things, and she got upset with me.”

“What someone? Which things?”

“She needs help, Jace. I don’t know how you guys can’t fucking see it. She’s drowning right in front of us.”

“What the hell are you talking about? She’s fine.”

“She is not fucking fine!” I roared.

“Excuse me?” Jace growled.

“She doesn’t ever fucking sleep, Jace, and when she does, she wakes up screaming from her nightmares. She’s back in Dallas all over again, bleeding on those steps, and not a goddamn one of you is there to pick her up! She won’t think about it or talk about it. It just festers inside her like a cancer that’s eating her alive.
