Chapter Twelve

Someone taps at the door and Asher walks over to let a pretty Hispanic woman inside. She smiles at Asher. “You needed stealth help?”

“Yeah. My brother got jumped by a couple other recruits.” Asher waves her over to where Xander is sprawled on the couch.

Jennifer gasps. “Oh no. I’ll get him all fixed up and I’ll keep it on the down low.”

“Thanks, Jennifer.”

“Of course.” Her smile slips when she turns and catches sight of me. “Oh. Hello.”

I give her a little wave, feeling awkward as hell. “Hey. I’m Xander’s uh...teammate.”

Xander smiles widely at me. “Get used to it because I’m making you keep me. No one else will have me and you don’t want a team at all so we’re perfect.”

My brows shoot high. “What?”

I've never seen him like this.

Asher chuckles. “That pill I gave him has definitely kicked in.”

Jennifer nods. “I’ll write him a note to excuse him from class the rest of the day. It’s nice to meet you.”

“You too.”

Asher gestures at me to join him over in his dining area so I get up after another glance at Xander and cross the room.

“She likes a little space when she’s working.”

“Ah.”

“And I wanted to talk to you.”

Dread curls in my stomach. “Okay.”

“You need to stop bullshitting here.”

Not where I thought he was going with this.

“What?”

He scowls. “I know you have more power than you’re letting show. I also know you’re smarter and faster than you’ve been pretending.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I know it’s pointless to keep playing dumb, but I need to buy myself a little time.

“From what I’ve observed and what Xan’s said, you prefer an office job or as backup instead of joining a team. It makes sense that you try to make yourself look less desirable to the other recruits here. But you’re wrong. If you excel here, you’ll have your pick of jobs and teams. And locations. If you stay average like you’ve been acting like you are, everything will be assigned for you. You’re flames are blue when you really let go, aren’t they?”

My eyes widen and I step back from him. “How do you know?”

He steps forward, not letting me run away. “I’ve been paying attention.”

“Why?”

“Because my brother likes you. And he doesn’t like people. And because you interest me.”

“What?” I don’t understand.

His eyes turn almost as blue as Xander’s. “You created that ball of fire the first day like it was nothing. You had no trouble with the game of catch. You can do incredibly precise things with your fire since you use it in your art. That takes incredible control and power. I think you’re a higher category than what’s been recorded for you.”

“What does that matter?” I ask.

He glances over at Xander and Jennifer to make sure they weren’t paying us any attention. “It matters because you have to learn to control the big stuff. If you can do precision work with fire, the big stuff will be easy, but not if you keep suppressing it.
