I must have looked sad, because my mother gave my hand a comforting stroke and looked really sad too. Soon she would have to drive back to Akureyri to start her late shift. I had a lump in my throat.

“Who will drive me to Húsavík now?” I asked my mother.

She looked at me for a long while. She was thinking. And while she was thinking, she held her breath. Then she gasped for air and slumped a little, said that she’d need to clarify that, but someone would be able to, and in the worst-case scenario she would come and pick me up, there was no need for me to worry about it, I had only just visited Grandfather yesterday after all, so we still had a few days to organize something, and for now we would drink our tea, and somehow she was right. I asked whether she wanted to stay with me a little longer today. At first she didn’t even react to my question, and just stared absent-mindedly into the distance, but then she said: “That’s not such a bad idea actually.” And then she smiled at me in a way that seemed kind of grateful.

Once my mother had finished her cup of tea, she made a few calls and switched her late shift with somebody who had an early shift, which meant she would have to work two shifts back to back but would be able to spend the afternoon with me and stay until I had fallen asleep. We had all the time in the world! We tidied the house from top to bottom, took a few sacks of rubbish to the dump, made spaghetti and watched an Adam Sandler movie. Then we went shopping, and only then were we reminded, once again, that Magga had just died.
