Chapter 24

Density

When the Ari taught us that all vessels and material of Creation are drawn from the World of Restriction he was not alluding to a situation in which the Vessels and material of which he was speaking were actually drawn or moved through space-time. In the kabbalistic lexicon, the word “drawn” refers to that which becomes “thickened” or “impure” by virtue of being farther from the Or Ein Sof.

Just as the air becomes thinner as we rise through the strata of Earth’s atmosphere, so too may it be said that the “atmosphere” of the metaphysical levels becomes less dense, and is hence deemed purer and higher as we withdraw from the World of Restriction. That which is farther from the Light is defined as being thicker and less pure than that which is closer to the Endless. The greater is its dissimilarity of form with the Endless, the greater is the degree of impurity, and this world, Malchut, the World of Restriction, being possessed with a tremendous Desire to Receive is, in the kabbalistic frame of reference, negative or impure to an extreme degree.

A person’s purity, or lack of it, is measured according to the degree of affinity he or she has with the Light. Those manifesting great Desire to Receive for Oneself Alone are considered by Kabbalah to have little affinity with the Endless and are hence deemed lower and less pure than those who convert the Desire to Receive into a Desire for the Sake of Imparting.
