When they checked in the next morning, D.W. said, âI was just walkinâ down the hall to talk to Rosenthal. Somethinâ came up.â They found Rosenthal and Nicholson in the interview room, and when the FDLE agents looked up, D.W. said, âI just got a phone call from Major Dothan at the Wildlife Commission. I guess that woman McConnell was playinâ footsie with spilled the beans about a lot of stuff, and she gave him the names of three other people who filed complaints that she made disappear. I don't know if there's much to them, but I figured yâall should know.â
âI don't care about how you got the information, but I wonder why he called you instead of us,â Nicholson said.
âI think he was tryinâ to mend fences,â D.W. said. âBut you're right, don't matter who he told, it just matters that we got the info.â
He handed them some papers that Dothan had faxed to him, and Nicholson read the first one, then passed it to Rosenthal, saying, âI can't believe she hid this stuff. What was she thinking?â
âAccordinâ to what she told Dothan, she was thinkinâ that McConnell was in love with her, and she was protectinâ her man,â D.W. said. âYou ever met Raymond McConnell?â
âCan't say that I have,â Nicholson said as he finished the second report and handed it to his partner.
Rosenthal shook his head and said, âNo, never dealt with him.â
âI don't know what magic spell he could work on women âcause he wasn't that good lookinâ of a man,â D.W. said. âHe was maybe average, but not movie-star handsome. But man, I tell you what, he attracted women like bees to honey. Or in his case, like flies to shit.â
âI donât know what to tell you, Sheriff. I guess some women are just attracted to bad guys,â said Nicholson. âI know that I personally have investigated at least half a dozen female detention guards who fell in love with prisoners and crossed the line. Theyâre trained not to do that, but it still happens.â
Rosenthal looked at Maddy and said, âNot meaning to sound sexist, but whatâs your take on that?â
âNo, that doesn't sound sexist at all,â Maddy said, laughing. Then she said, âIâm the wrong person to ask. At least as far as McConnell is concerned. After all, I pulled a gun on him. But I know some women are attracted to the swaggering bad boy thing. And there's no question that some women are drawn to the power of the badge, so I guess it's not surprising. Then again, Iâve known men that couldnât keep it in their pants, too, even when they knew a woman was bad news.â
Rosenthal read the third report and handed the papers to John Lee and Maddy, and said, âI know we had you talk to some people already, but do any of these names mean anything to you?â
They looked at the reports, and John Lee said, âYeah, I know all three of them.â
âMe, too,â Maddy said, âDo you want us to follow up on them?â
âIf you would.
