CHAPTER 27

Ryan and Miles plotted out the day’s activities over breakfast at Casa Nicole, a modern but decidedly Mexican place Ryan had discovered while Miles was in Miami. The walls were covered with a unique collection of self-portraits by Puerto Vallarta’s hometown artistic hero, Frida Kahlo.

Miles jumped right into their tasks for the day. “Let’s split up. I think it would be wise for me to go check out the Versalles property alone. You’ve just been there, and too many visits by either of us before they’re operational might raise suspicions. Any thoughts on how you’ll dig up information on the cartels and find out if they have connections to local law enforcement?”

“Actually, I do and it won’t even require some elaborate cover story.” Ryan had obviously anticipated Miles’s question and had a plan ready to go.

Miles was intrigued. “Do tell.”

“I plan to walk into the offices of Vallarta Newsday, the local online English-language news outlet, and introduce myself as a journalist on assignment from the New York Times. Which, of course, I am. I’ll truthfully explain how I’m working on a story about the influx of expat telecommuters to the city and, assuming they’ll talk with me about it, I’ll eventually steer the conversation toward the local crime scene.”

“I love it,” said Miles. “You being you to get the information we’re after is the perfect cover. As one professional speaking to another, you should be able to easily gain their confidence and really find out what they know.”

They each downed one more cup of coffee and went off on their respective assignments.

Miles’s visit to the site on Calle Lisboa proved to be enlightening, both figuratively and literally. When he arrived at the site, the trailer door was open with the unmistakable sound of someone working inside. He poked his head in the door and saw a man installing a light fixture.

“Hello,” Miles said to let the man know he was there.

“Buenos días, señor! Can I help you?” the man asked.

Miles was elated the man spoke English.

“I live nearby and I’m just curious about what is going on with the property,” Miles explained.

“I don’t really know. Just putting in lights so they can be open on Friday.”

The brief visit had given Miles what he came for. He and Ryan would return on Friday as prospective buyers of whatever they would be selling in that trailer. He had no doubt whoever worked there would provide information that would either lead them to Reese or turn their search in the right direction.
