“What’s wrong?” Flint asked, pressing the button for their floor. “What is it?”

“I’m not sure.” She handed Flint the letter. He scanned it quickly before handing it back to her.

“It’s just gibberish,” he said. “It looks like a prank.”

“I don’t think it is, but I need a couple of my books from class. I have a weird feeling it’s in code,” she answered. “I think it’s from Dr. Walters.”

“That’s not batshit crazy at all. Let’s show Knox.” Willow followed Flint down the hallway to his apartment. They walked in silence as she contemplated the letter. They found Knox helping Felicia cook dinner in the kitchen.

“Willow got a letter,” Flint announced.

“I’m going to grab my books. I’ll be right back.” She left the letter with Knox who was trying his best to read it. At first glance, it really did look like lines of gibberish.

She jogged to her apartment and retrieved several of her books on Victorian poetry. Flint stood just outside of his door in the hallway watching to make sure she was safe. It really was ridiculous that she couldn’t walk the three hundred feet without a babysitter.

“Willow? Is that you?” she heard her grandmother call from the kitchen.

“Yeah, I’m just picking up a couple of books.”

“Are you staying for dinner?” Her grandparents had gotten used to either making enough to feed everyone and bagging up lots of leftovers when they were alone.

“Not tonight. I have something to do with Flint,” she called back. Hurrying into her bedroom, she pulled the books off her shelf and headed back to the door.

“You seem to be spending a lot of time with Flint. Have you heard anything more from that crazy woman who kept leaving you gifts?” Her grandmother was leaning up against the doorjamb between the living room and the kitchen.

“Not really. I think she might have given up.” Willow had made the decision after seeing how upset the meeting with Dex had made them, to spare her grandparents as much worry as possible.

They already had enough on their plate. Anything she could do to help relieve their stress, she would. Even if it meant stretching the truth a little. Okay, a lot. But she wouldn’t apologize for trying to take that burden off their backs.

“Okay, be careful. Tell Felicia we say hi,” Dolores said.

“I will,” she answered. Stepping over to her grandmother, Willow pressed a kiss to her cheek. She left the apartment to find an agitated Flint pacing outside her door.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Starting to worry about how long it was taking you to get a couple of books.”

“I’m fine,” she smiled before pressing up on her toes to brush her lips against his. “I was just talking to my grandmother.”

“I still worry,” he replied.

They returned to his apartment to find dinner on the table. Apparently a bored Knox had prepped and cooked a roast with all the trimmings. Felecia had tossed a salad as her contribution. Willow left her books on the coffee table and joined everyone around the dining table.
