CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Since both Gage and Amahle had their weapons free and ready to use, Singh had undoubtedly seen the rifles at the same time he saw their bearers. He was unperturbed. The fact that his new guests had loaded guns leveled at him and could kill him five times over before his security team could help him didn’t seem to cause the man any particular stress or fear.

Amahle said, “Do not try anything foolish. You’re at a disadvantage. I would bet money if I had the chance that you know who we are—and what we’re capable of.”

Singh offered an unhurried nod, and reached out for a velvet robe hanging on the pole that supported an umbrella over his poolside table. To his credit, he appeared to understand that slow, deliberate motions were his best bet and that any sudden moves might get him shot.

Amahle wondered if he might have a weapon under the robe, but she doubted it. Singh took up the robe and swung it around his shoulders. Once his arms were through the sleeves, he tied it around his waist with a sash.

“Tea?” he asked again.

Gage and Amahle kept silent, watching his movements and face for any sign of sudden aggression or disobedience.

They saw none. Singh wore an easy and genuine smile. Combined with his grandfatherly beard and bright eyes, it made him look downright pleasant. He walked about four steps to another small table nearby, where a pole and hook held a dangling copper pot near the burning brazier.

Amahle watched, almost disbelieving what she saw, as the man casually adjusted the pot so it hung over the flames. Then he set out three cups with strainers for each before taking up a small ceramic jar and measuring out equal portions of dried black tea leaves. It was fragrant enough that Amahle smelled it from ten paces away. The aroma was enticing, with hints of rose and blackberry.

Gage was about fifteen feet to her left. He flicked his eyes toward her, and she returned the gesture. They were probably thinking the same thing—that Singh was stalling until his security team had the chance to wander out to the pool patio.

Everything seemed wrong. The man was truly unafraid. Amahle couldn’t detect so much as a single indication that he was bluffing them. Granted, a yoga practitioner might be more skilled than the average person at controlling his emotions. Yet she somehow intuited that if she and Gage were to rush him and drag him into the trees, they would make things worse rather than better. Doing so might cost them an opportunity rather than gain them one.

It appeared that Singh wanted to talk, which was what they’d intended him to do all along.

He gestured at the table and a couple of nearby chairs. “Please, sit down.”

Amahle responded in a voice that was low but edged with menace. Whatever the strange man’s game was, he had to understand that his visitors were immensely dangerous people.

“We’re not here for tea.” She advanced a single step.
