CHAPTER 12
âIf you tell me Dixon was piddling around with her, too, Iâm going to scream. That woman! Oh! She makes me want to tear her hair out. Next, youâll tell me she had affairs with everyone in Marshallâs graduating class! I know the boys are at fault, too, but come on. Is she some sort of Lolita?â
Dana relaxed into his chair. âThe deeper we look into her past, the more we find. As a for instance, she was married before to a man named Lonnie Lipski. She divorced him years ago, but not before taking his life savings with her. Then she moved on to a man named Arnold Masters. Took his car, a sixty-six Mustang, and his dog, of all things.â
âAnd shall I take a stab at this and dare suggest all of these men were her senior?â Win inquired.
Dana stabbed his finger in the air. âYou got it. She had a brief period of quiet while she lived with her mother until she died, and then she married Frank Epson.â
âTell me something, Officer Nelson, I remember Marshall saying she lived in an apartment with her mother. Did her mother own the apartment?â
He gave me a knowing grin that I saw clearly in the fading light. âI know where youâre going, Ghost Watcher. Sheenaâs mother lived on social security. They lived paycheck to paycheck. Mostly off her motherâs check, if you listen to her neighbor.â
Nodding, I now had a very clear picture of Sheena. âSo Marshall was right. She was a grifter, just looking for a new mark. And Frank was it. A place to hang her hat while she did mostly nothing. Was she involved with anyone this neighbor knew of?â
Dana agreed. âSure seems that way. And nope, Sheenaâs motherâs neighbor didnât see anyone but Sheena. Though, she did say Sheenaâs mother told her to mend her flirty ways or she couldnât move in with her. But we need Frankâs will, if he has one, to see whatâs really up. We need to know who heâs leaving his things to.â
âThough,â Win interjected. âLet us keep in mind, if Marshall was working singing engagements to make extra money for what Frankâs insurance didnât cover, maybe he didnât have much at all. That means the house, if his mortgage is in a stage where it would be beneficial to sell, could be worth quite a bit, depending on varying factors. The condition of the house, location and so on.â
âThatâs a good point,â Hal said. âI canât believe how expensive it is to live here, or Iâd already have a summer home right on the beach.â
âI can arrange that. Iâd do so quite happily,â Win offered, and I knew it was due to the fact that he knew it would make me happy.
Hal jumped up from her chair and wrapped her arms around Winâs neck, giving him a hug and a peck on the cheek. âYouâre very kind, sir, but I can find a way to buy one on my own, thank you very much.
