Chapter 14

* * *

“So I have a concussion … it’s not a big one.” I wanted to go home, but no one would let me. Was there such a thing as medical kidnapping, because I was pretty sure I was being medically kidnapped. “I want to go home.”

It had been hours since Haley had brought me to the ER. I was now in a hospital room.

I thought about Astrid and her scaring-the-sun-up ceremony. It certainly wouldn’t help my headache. “Maybe I should stay here overnight. But what about Max?”

My poor son had been through enough. First, he had a shit for a dad, then his dad ran off, and now I had a concussion. It would be a miracle if he turned out even slightly normal.

“Don’t worry. I’ll take him home with me.” Daman squeezed my right hand.

“No, I’m taking him home with me.” Ben squeezed my left hand.

I felt like the wishbone of a chicken.

“Okay, here’s what we’re going to do.” Monica walked into the room and smacked her leather tote bag on the rolling table next to my bed. She pointed first at Daman and then to Ben. “The two of you are going to play nice. Both of you will go together to pick up Max and my son Landon. I’ve called the school to tell them you’ll be picking the boys up. You’re going to bring them to Daman’s house—”

Ben opened his mouth to protest, but Monica silenced him with a glare.

“You’re going to take them to Daman’s house and tell them they’re having an overnight swim party or something fun like that. Tell them that Mustang hit her head and that Haley and I are taking care of her tonight. Haley’s nanny is picking up the girls from school and taking them to the orthodontist. She’ll drop them off at Daman’s house after. You two are to make sure the kids are safe and protected at all times. They are our top priority. Bautista has organized around-the-clock protection for us while we’re in the hospital. Mustang leaves tomorrow, and y’all can fight over where she sleeps tomorrow night, but for right now, we need both of you to keep our kids safe.” Monica was even more devious than I’d thought. She knew both Daman and Ben were overly-alpha alpha males who took the security of their loved ones very seriously. She’d given them a task that played on their alpha-male-ness.

I would have clapped, but they were both still holding my hands.

“I would appreciate you both making sure that Max doesn’t worry about me.” I wanted to see him, but I didn’t want him to see me like this—lying in a hospital bed and looking helpless.

“I don’t trust Daman’s men, and why can’t we go to my house?” Ben was bordering on whiny.

“Your house doesn’t have armed guards.” Monica leaned against the bed. “So can we count on you?”

She looked at each one of them in turn like she was the school principal and she was counseling the bully right out of them.
