Chapter Thirteen—Sofia

“Oh. My. God,” Gina exclaimed, her eyes wide as she peered out the open slider.

I thought she was trying to distract me because I’d been asking her what she and Grant had discussed, but her face held genuine surprise. “What?”

“I swear I just saw the lead guitarist for Bad Influence on Grant’s balcony.”

I turned just in time to catch a backlit, silhouetted figure wave and step back into Grant’s place. I didn’t register anything besides the fact that he was about the same height and build as Grant, which made me believe it was Grant she’d seen and she was projecting her sexy, bad-boy rock-star fantasies onto my neighbor.

Bad Influence was a well-known rock band, one of Gina’s and Dom’s favorites. Our uncle Vito was a concert tour promoter, so we’d gotten to meet a lot of big names over the years. I’d stopped going to rock concerts once I hit medical school, but Dom and Gina still went whenever they could, though now, they were the ones chaperoning the younger cousins.

Now that I thought about it, Grant did kind of resemble the famous musician, but then again, my older relatives often told me I looked like a young Sophia Loren too. It didn’t mean anything.

“Why would the lead guitarist for Bad Influence be on Grant’s balcony?”

Gina shook her head and exhaled. “I don’t know. I must be imagining things.”

“You have been putting in a lot of hours,” I said sympathetically.

“It’s crunch time. It’s imperative my thesis and final project are perfect. I told you that my academic advisor is a personal friend of Andrea Collins, didn’t I?”

The name sounded vaguely familiar. “Remind me who Andrea Collins is again?”

“Only the head designer at Kensington Graphic Creative, the top graphic design firm on the East Coast. She’s coming in to guest critique our work. If I impress her, there’s a chance I’ll get an internship.”

“Kensington. That’s in New York City, right?”

“Manhattan,” Gina confirmed with a nod.

“Are you sure that’s what you want? I’m sure there are plenty of opportunities closer to home.”

“There are,” Gina agreed. “But the name carries weight. Just like you could have stayed local but chose to go to Johns Hopkins for med school. With KGC on my résumé and the connections I’d make there, I could write my own ticket.”

I understood that even if the thought of Gina leaving just as I was finishing up my residency saddened me. I was looking forward to having more free time and, therefore, more girl time. Until the accident, the only times Gina and I saw each other were Sunday family dinners—when I wasn’t working—and the occasional spa trips our brother Nick gifted us with.

Then again, if I didn’t get the position at Cecilton Memorial, I might be the one relocating. I said as much to Gina.

“Who knows?” I said. “Maybe I’ll join you. There’s got to be at least one big-city hospital that’ll have me if I don’t get the ER job, right?”

“Stop,” Gina chastised. “You’re a shoo-in.”

A week ago, I would have agreed with her.
