“This has to be epic,” John would say. Directions like these froze us in our tracks.At times, we were as quizzical as Kubrick’s apes gazing in wonder at the black obelisk of our task. John’s Think Wrong exercises (like ideation through random word selection or massive “Renga” sculptures) attempted to break our prescribed thought patterns and illuminate alternate possibilities. Trusting in a different methodology is challenging, especially when results from the new way are unknown and the old way is so … predictable. But we learned to believe in the process and in the process, ourselves. That’s about as well as I candescribe my month in Alabama.
