Chapter Fourteen

Morning came early. By nine o’clock, Pete and I were sitting in the conference room with Agents Devlin and Padilla, going over our strategies for the interviews with Daniel and Justin Thompson.

“We’re interviewing the old man first at ten o’clock,” Pete said.

“Are their lawyers going to be present?” Devlin asked

Pete chuckled. “These days, they don’t go to the bathroom without a lawyer being present. Ever since the indictments, they’ve stayed lawyered up.”

“Do you really think they’ll talk to you?”

“There’s a good chance. Both of them have enormous egos. Also, they want to find out everything that we know about their operations,” I said.

“And they both have nothing but contempt for those of us that work for the local constabulary,” Pete said. Constabulary? I wanted to ask him if he’d bought a dictionary, but it wouldn’t be fair to rib him in front of the Feds.

“We’ll be watching on CCTV,” Devlin said.

“Yes. I think with these two, that’s the best way to handle it. They would be more guarded if either of you were in the room,” I said.

“I can see that,” Padilla allowed. “How are you all going to play it?”

“Again, they’ve both been around the block a few times. They aren’t going to fall for any games. We’ll just have to go in there with a plan and hope that we can get some information,” Pete said.

“I think we’ll be lucky if we just get some kind of indication as to whether they were or weren’t involved in the bombing,” I added.

“So far we have no physical evidence to link them, or anyone for that matter, to the bomb. I talked to Agent Harvey this morning. Mind you, they don’t have any of the detailed test results back and won’t for at least a month,” Padilla said.

“We just have to go in there and throw mud around and see if any of it sticks,” I said. “Daniel has nothing to lose one way or the other. He’s in his seventies and, with or without Eddie’s testimony, we have enough charges against him to put him away for the rest of his life. Justin, on the other hand, has a chance of seeing the light of day sometime in the future.”

“Which gives him the stronger motive for killing Eddie,” Devlin said.

“That’s true, but he’s not the firebrand that his father is, and he’s not quite as smart. Daniel beat a man almost to death when he was younger just because the man looked at his wife. He’s got the personality of a water moccasin. Justin is more of a rattlesnake,” Pete said.

“Okay, you’re losing me with the snake analogies,” Padilla said.

“Sorry. A rattlesnake will give you a warning, and generally, if given a choice, will move away from you. A moccasin, on the other hand, doesn’t give you much of a warning and they’ve been known to charge at people.”

“Yeah, okay, I get the idea,” Padilla said. “So your best bet is Justin?”

Pete and I looked at each other and nodded.
