CHAPTER 8

Oh my God, did I just say that! Handsy, Vanessa. That’s the corniest thing on earth! I’m so happy Tyler is behind me and can’t see the mortification on my face. And shit, I just called him Ty. I haven’t used his nickname to his face since high school! What’s happening here? So much for me making him wait, and I’m the one panicking! I stop myself from reaching up to take my hair back down so I can hide my face.

“Whoa! I almost ran into you there,” Papa says as he comes out of the grow room. He looks at me curiously. It’s hard to hide things from my dad. “Oh, hi, Tyler. Are you here for another tour?”

“Yes, sir, I am.” He’s standing so close I swear I can feel heat emanating off his tall body, roasting me from the top of my head to the middle of my back.

“Well, let me show you something. I bet my daughter didn’t mention it.” I know instantly what Papa wants to brag about, and I can’t help thinking, Bless him. It’ll give me time to recover my composure. I step out of Tyler’s way, so he can follow Papa. I wave to my employees who are busy harvesting the plants on this floor. It’s a busy time and requires all hands on deck, and I don’t want to be a distraction. I join Papa and Tyler in the far corner of the room, where a small section has been cordoned off.

“Wait a minute,” Tyler says as I walk up. “You are growing plants with no dirt?”

“Sure am,” Papa says proudly.

“How is that possible?”

“It’s called hydroponics. A fancy word for growing cannabis in water. Of course, we have to constantly mix in essential nutrients and minerals.”

“Do you mind?” Tyler points to one of the containers.

“Not at all,” Papa answers. Tyler walks around the large water- and plant-filled box, bending down to get a closer look. “What’s the benefit of this? Is water better than dirt?”

Papa looks at me. “You want to answer that one, Vanessa.”

I nod, then point to our employees. “They are harvesting the plants. Once they are done and the plants are in the drying room, they have to empty the pots of all dirt and put it in big drums we have out back where a company comes and picks it up for us. Then, after thoroughly cleaning the room because dirt tends to get everywhere, they wash the containers with a strong hydrogen peroxide.

“We have new dirt delivered to refill the containers so we can plant the seedlings to start the process all over again. It’s labor-intensive and time-consuming, but it’s also the reason our product is so outstanding. If Papa’s experiment with hydroponics works, we just have to throw away the brick once we harvest and put the seedling in a new brick. Obviously, it’s not a real brick because it’s much lighter and full of holes, but that’s what we call it.”

Tyler nods as I continue talking.
