Eat, Drink, and Sleep Obedience

Show me a champion and I’ll show you someone who has a deep devotion to obedience. Regardless of the sport or field, a person rises from obscurity to enjoy championship status by becoming fully obedient to his or her coach’s training advice. Coaches bring a historical objectivity to the table when mentoring a protégé. A coach’s ability to draw from a wealth of knowledge and experience is invaluable to someone who is young and inexperienced, even though a raw gift may be present.

In journeying to the mountain of God, we will face a time when God gives us a test in obedience. He tests every worshiper because our obedience impacts our true fellowship with Him. Obedience simply means the act of obeying. The word suggests that you have heard God’s request, instruction, or command and you choose to obey Him. Obedience is what God expects from us and, frankly, it is our reasonable act of service.

Since God expects this kind of compliance from us, He will test us. But God is not walking around with a big stick waiting to pop us whenever He finds us walking in disobedience. Rather, God is seeking relationship with us. Without our obedience to His Word, He is unable to deepen those relational bonds.

If intimacy with God is your goal, obedience cannot be one of your low-level concerns. It must be up there at the top along with holiness and cherishing the fear of the Lord.
