A few weeks later, on June 22, 1936, Nelböck left his apartment at eight o’clock heading for the university, where Schlick was to give a lecture that morning. In his pocket was a .25-caliber pistol, loaded with seven bullets. Nelböck waited in the main university building on the first steps of the grand staircase leading to the Faculty of Law, knowing that Schlick would ascend the opposite staircase to the Faculty of Philosophy. At 9:20 Schlick appeared and began slowly walking up the staircase. Nelböck ran up the stairs past him, turned, and fired four times at point-blank range, putting two bullets through his heart, one through his bowels, and one into his lower leg. “Now, you damn bastard, there you have it!” he shouted. Schlick’s lifeless body was carried into the Philosophical Faculty meeting room. Nelböck, having apparently forgotten his vow to kill himself in the excitement, stood calmly, pistol in hand, waiting for the police to arrive and take him away.
