Chapter 26

Strength. Everything about me feels strong and powerful. My white fur blows in the wind as I stand on the cliff, looking at Accalia below. The wolf spirit is excited. This is what she was created for. After being locked up for so long, she is finally free. The town is under attack. I smell smoke in the air. We are its protector.

A shuffling behind me alerts me that I have company. I turn around to see that Wren, Jacob, and Alex arrive and flank me. We are a pack. This is my pack. There is a threat we need to face together.

Tilting my head back, I let out a howl. The sounds of my pack joining in sends excitement through my body. I leap off the rock ledge, landing easily thirty feet below. Taking off running, I head toward town. Accalia needs us, and we are here to protect it.

A car door closes, jolting me awake. I blink a few times, stretching since I slept in a funny position. We are stopped at a gas station. It’s vaguely familiar, but I can’t place where we are.

Wren exits with a few things in his hands. As I open his door from the inside, he smiles. “Hey, sleepy head. Sorry to wake you, but we needed gas and I was starving.”

“How long was I asleep? Where are we?”

He hops in, handing me a breakfast sandwich and coffee. “You’ve been out for about six hours. We are about a hundred miles into Utah near the Wyoming border. We’ve got about twelve hours to go, so get comfortable.”

In between bites of the food Wren gave me, I ask, “First, is it okay if we talk?” In answer, Wren lights the candle. I take it as a go-ahead to talk freely. “Are we going to have to use the candle every time or will we be far enough away to be safe?”

“Jamie, I wish I had all the answers, but most of this is as new to me as it is to you. Jacob said that magic is used to listen in, so magic is what can block it. The clearing had a large saturation of it and this candle creates a small bubble, but not a very powerful one,” He looks out the window at the flat landscape flying past the car.

“We are doing it as a precaution, but I have a feeling us sneaking out of The Academy blew our cover of being innocent and rule abiding,” He sends me another smile. I feel my heart flutter slightly, still not used to seeing it.

“So where exactly are we heading?”

“When I was growing up, my dad once showed me a cabin on our property. It should be hidden and protected enough for us to hide and stay safe. After we get there, we will regroup and make a plan.” As with anytime he mentions his parents, a sadness creeps into his features.

“My dad’s journal focuses mostly on a girl, or a group he refers to in a feminine way.
