are classified as specialized continuations within the collection of star point joseki. In both of these diagrams, White 1 and 3 build up power, with the implication of seeking an attack against Black's single stone on the star point.

At the same time, Black's one space pincer was played with the intention of compelling White to enter the corner at the 3-3 point, so as to have an easily played game. Consequently, White 1 and 3 evade the opponent's bidding.
