Chapter Twenty

Jericho

The club is in full force this morning. Everyone is moving things around, and I jump in without asking questions. It’s obvious what we’re doing. Everything that normally lives in a clubhouse room has been shifted to one side and the other half of the room is packed full of boxes. Once everything has been brought into the room, we set into taking things out of the package and putting them together.

Dallas and I work together on the crib, while Jacob and Dez argue over what direction the legs of the changing table are supposed to go. The room is quickly turned over into a nursery for the new baby, and I can’t believe I almost missed out on this part. I was so ready to run from the pain that I would have run before I got to see this part of the process.

We were together for the grief- the torturous assault on my soul. It’s right that we’re together for the start of the recovery. All of us coming together to be there with Ridley during the worst time of his life felt like a crazy thing to do. Why the hell would you want a group of bikers there to watch you cry?

Now I think I understand a little better. They help each other through the hard stuff. We were there so Ridley didn’t have to be alone, so he had someone to hold the baby, and someone to talk him back from the urge to leave. Today we’re giving him a place to take care of his kid where he’ll be closer to us, people who can help when he doesn’t think he can do it by himself.

Army comes from behind me and claps his hand on my shoulder. His little nod shows his appreciation in probably the only way he knows how. “I’m glad you're here.”

I know what that means. He’s happy I didn’t run off. He knows I could’ve. He probably knows I tried- Army really does know everything that’s going on in this city. He feels it in his bones. “Me too.”

“Need to talk to you, though,” he says without looking me in the eye. He nods his head toward the door, and I stand up slowly, giving eyes to Dallas, silently asking if he thinks I’m going to be in trouble.

Dallas is no help. He just shrugs.

I follow Army out of the room and down to Church, ready for what promises to be another terrible thing to happen. He locks the door behind me, and my guts turn inside out. Taking a deep breath, I steel my shoulders and prepare for the worst. I’m going to get some kind of punishment for leaving my brothers behind when something was happening without telling anyone.

“Sit,” Army says, pointing to a chair to the right of the table.

“Just tell me.” I don’t exactly want to sit at this table when I can still see a stain from the blood Penelope donated to it.

“Sit down, Joker.
