Chapter 15

Sam

THE WINDOWS EXPLODED with gunfire just as Rosa hit the floor. I ducked away, back pressed against the wall to avoid the cutting shower of glass. Thought turned to muscle memory and training as I alternated between firing back and ducking between rounds to replace spent cartridges. Having crawled across the floor to get her own gun, Rosa provided cover fire as I bobbed from window to window.

The firefight could have lasted for ten minutes, or it could have lasted hours—time had no meaning as the sound of firing guns and the strike of bullets ricocheted in my ears and my head. One by one, the terrorists went down, the truck finally crashing into the building with the half-collapsed roof as I got the driver. But several of the guys had been on foot, and I could see them scattering in different directions around the yard before I could site them.

“Damn it,” I seethed, throwing my rifle down and taking out my sidearm as I turned to Rosa. “Stay here. Shoot anything that tries to come in.”

I didn’t wait for her to acknowledge my order before I was out the door, pressed against the wall, my gun at the ready.

The first terrorist was crouched behind a pile of wood stacked against the side of the building. Traveling the opposite way around the house, I took him by surprise, but only enough to keep him from firing at my approach. He turned at the last second, and we exchanged fire before one of my bullets got him in the chest. His body jerked back, and he fell to the ground and lay still.

The second I had to duck back under the overhang of one of the outbuildings to avoid a bullet coming so close to my ear that I could feel the breeze of its passing. There was another gunfire exchange, and I managed to get him just before I had to reload.

The sudden silence made the blood rushing in my ears the loudest thing in the yard as I jammed another clip into my gun. A sweep of the area showed no trace of the third terrorist, and no movement gave away his position. I crept forward, forgoing some cover for a better view. From that vantage point, I could see Rosa as she peered around the doorframe. I signaled her to see if she saw anyone, and she shook her head no.

Cursing under my breath, I crept toward one of the other outbuildings, every muscle taut and quivering with tension. But the last rays of the sun blinded me for a moment as I moved out from under the overhang of the small shed, and shadow became bright sunset.

“Sam!” I heard Rosa’s shout and turned just in time to see the butt of a gun coming at my face. I managed to twist at the last second, and the blow glanced off my cheek and my shoulder. It was still powerful and turned me almost 180 degrees, pain blossoming through my shoulder and zinging across my collarbone.
