The late Professor Brander Matthews, who had made a life-long study of conjuring and conjurers, told me that Heller was the most entertaining of all the magicians. Dr. Matthews knew Heller intimately, and even invented a trick for Heller’s program. The trick was an addition to another effect, and took only a second to show, but it impressed Heller’s audiences. Heller had caused two cards to rise from the deck while he stood quite apart; both cards were those previously selected by the audience. The third card which rose was not the one chosen (and here was Dr. Matthews’ addition), but at Heller’s order it instantly changed to the selected card.

The name of Herrmann is one of the best known in magic, and this only partly because the family produced several magicians. The first was Samuel Herrmann, a German physician who now and again abandoned pills in order to travel about as a magician. His conjuring met with success, and he gave a number of royal performances from France to Turkey. The eldest and youngest of his sixteen children were boys. Compars, or Carl, Herrmann, was the first born. He found magic interesting, and became a leading magician. The youngest child, Alexander, while still a boy became his brother’s assistant, and later started out with a show of his own. Both men gave their shows in America, but the one best remembered was Alexander, or, as he was better known, Herrmann The Great.

The small picture on this page is of Carl Herrmann. The larger picture is of Alexander, who demonstrated to American mag1e1ans the value of clever pantomime, of proper presentation of his effects, and above all of bright, witty and adult patter. Besides helping magicians by his example, Herrmann the Great with his culture and gentlemanly manners convinced the world that a magician was an artist rather than an unholy vagabond.
