Mary Hears of John’s Arrest

I write with such a heavy heart tonight from the disturbing news we have heard. James came running into the house exclaiming John had been imprisoned. King Herod, apparently, does not like being told the truth. The story we were told is that John told Herod the law forbade him to take his brother’s wife as his own. From what I have heard about Herod, I am surprised he did not have John put to death. Everyone knows John only publicly spoke the words everyone else speaks in secret. Herod knows John is a righteous and holy man who speaks only the words of the law.

Hopefully, John will remain safe in prison. The story told by one of Herod’s servants is that King Herod often calls John to his palace to talk to him. Before the conversation ends, Herod becomes so upset over John’s words, he sends him back to prison.

I fear even more for John’s safety. He has always been a rebel of sorts and very outspoken. He does not know how to hold back his feelings. If he thinks something, he says it. He does not care who he offends. He is not going to change his story just to make Herod happy. “If it is the truth, it should not hurt” I have heard John say many times. I wonder how long Herod can keep him in prison without a good reason. I am sure John’s followers are there daily to check on him. I hope they will be brave enough to demand his release. Herod cannot keep John in prison indefinitely.

I wonder if Jesus knows of his cousin’s predicament. He always tried to protect John. I fear he may go visit him and also be thrown in prison. My heart yearns to be with both of them—to help in some way. I cannot just sit here and fret.

Another group of travelers came by today telling that one of Jesus’ new followers is a tax collector named Levi. I am beginning to wonder if all this tumult is beginning to affect his mind. Why a tax collector? They said he even had dinner at his house. He is deliberately associating with sinners. What is wrong with him? He knows how sinful tax collectors are? Why would he want to associate with the likes of them when he has his pick of good righteous men? I must go see what is going on in his mind. It is time for me to leave this house and do whatever I can to help him. The boys can take care of things here and it appears Jesus needs me badly.

Dear God, please help me find Jesus. I know he can explain everything. I must see for myself what everyone is talking about. I beg for John’s safety. May he and Jesus and their followers abide safely under the cover of Your always protective out-stretched wings.
