JESSE LET HER CAR DRIFT to a stop at the curb in front of Garrett’s house. She cut her ignition and sat in the February dusk. After a crazy Monday dealing with everyone else’s crises, she needed a few seconds to breathe, some time to organize her heart and mind. She gripped the steering wheel and lifted her eyes. Father, I— The beginnings of her silent prayer for wisdom died in the flood of light from a passing car. The driver’s high beams hit the diamond on Jesse’s hand. The light bouncing across the facets of the stone stung her eyes but warmed her heart and had her sitting straighter as she contemplated what the ring meant. Not just a symbol of Garrett’s love for her. When she’d allowed him to slip it on her finger, it became a symbol of her love for him as well. And the Bible had a lot to say on that subject in First Corinthians chapter thirteen. Love was patient and kind. Love was longsuffering and not easily provoked. Love was hope and belief in the person you loved. Most of all, to her way of thinking this evening, if you loved a man enough to wear his ring, there shouldn’t be room in your heart to believe evil stories or entertain ideas about giving up.

Giving up?

The thought put a frown on Jesse’s face. Where did that even come from? A second thought twisted her heart. Is that what her hesitancy Friday night and her anger on Sunday had allowed Garrett to think? Heat rolled over her in a wave. Not only did she believe in Garrett without reservation, Jessica Elizabeth Grey didn’t run from confrontation...ever. She hadn’t caved in to Tyson’s demands all those years ago. She always spoke her mind to her friends, even when they might wish she’d keep her opinion to herself. And by all she considered sacred, Garrett would know she loved and supported him before another ten minutes passed.

Jesse reached for the door handle and froze. Even though wisdom wasn’t at the top of her prayer list after that internal pep talk, going into any situation without prayer was just foolish. She closed her eyes, and her whispered words filled the car.

“Father, thank You for Garrett. I’m sorry if I’ve made him feel less than appreciated over the last couple of days. I was going to ask You for wisdom, and I always need that, but maybe what I need most right now is strength. I know Garrett is hurting and feeling betrayed by someone he tried to help. I know that what’s happened so far is just the tip of the iceberg if the truth is not brought to light quickly. Help me be someone Garrett can lean on and depend on as this thing heats up. I want him to know, every day, that if everyone else walks away, I’ll be there for him. Help me to show him every ounce of First Corinthians thirteen love.”

The last word of her prayer faded, and Jesse straightened her shoulders and lifted her chin.
