It’s a cool summer morning in 1974. Yano and I and the children are at the airport to see Mami off. Chopi is there too; the estrangement hasn’t taken full effect yet. She stands there with eyebrows pulled up high, her mouth tightly shut, not a sign of sympathy. My tears in my throat are choking me as we kiss goodbye and I watch that brokenhearted woman walking across the tarmac towards the stairs, departing on this much-anticipated trip. My heart aches for Mami, thinking about the self-inflicted irony of her life; her desperate unhappiness and the dream-come-true trip. That morning I cry for hours. I cry out all my tears that are meant for Mami. After that there are no more tears left.
