I HALF EXPECTED TO find another Monopoly card on my doorstep at Donut Hearts when I unlocked the front door, but there was nothing there out of the ordinary. I guess they got their point across with one.

Either that, or they’d run out of cards.

I flipped on a light, the coffee pot, and the oil, in that order. As I started mixing the batter for the cake donuts, the first order of my day, I wondered again who had left me the unusual calling card. Honestly, it could have been any one of the multitude of folks we’d grilled the day before. It appeared that our list of suspects had one thing in common: they wanted the past to stay buried in the past.

Unfortunately, for them anyway, that wasn’t going to happen. As I separated the large bowl of batter into smaller containers so I could flavor the batches individually, I wondered where Arnie had gone last night and if he’d ever come home. How about Maggie? Was she going to be absent from the Boxcar Grill today, or would she show up so we could speak with her? I didn’t think she killed Susie Mae, but running away like that didn’t look good. Then again, George, Gabby, Lucy, Parker, and Harrick hadn’t exactly welcomed our questions with open arms.

As I started dropping the batter into the hot oil for the old-fashioned donuts—usually my first donut made of the day—I tried to focus on the oil and not the case we were working on. This stuff was boiling hot, and it would do some serious damage if I got sloppy around it and burned myself. In my job, there were times I could ponder the secrets of the universe and other instances where I had to pay attention or suffer the consequences.

“Good morning, Suzanne,” Emma said when she came into the shop right on time. “How goes the world of donutmaking this morning?”

“Different day, same old stuff,” I told her with a grin. “How’s life treating you?”

“I can’t complain,” she answered as she grabbed her apron and started in on the dishes I’d already built up for her.

“If you did, no one would listen anyway, right?” I asked with a laugh.

“You would,” she countered.

“That’s true,” I agreed. “So, how was class with Jason Clover?”

She actually blushed a bit. “He actually carried my books to my car after class. How old-fashioned can you get?”

“I don’t know. I think it’s kind of sweet,” I said.

“Don’t tell him, but I think so too,” Emma answered with a hint of laughter in her voice. “Before you ask, I’m still getting over the breakup, so I’m not ready to start dating again.”

“But when you do, how high is Jason going to be on your list?”

She shrugged. “At the moment, he’s at the top of it.”

“He’s a good-looking guy, isn’t he?” I asked with a grin.

“Suzanne, you’re a happily married woman. You’re not supposed to notice those things.”

“Emma, I’m married; I’m not dead. It’s okay. Jake wouldn’t mind me saying it.
