GROUNDED

If only she could see! The snow was now so thick that to her eyes, there were no mountains. In fact, there was very little but the huge flakes of puffy frozen moisture.

Five large gauges were positioned in front of her. Speed was to the left, but even though they were still on the ground, it was the altitude gauge on the right that drew all of her attention. She had to get off the ground and over the ridges. Then came the mountains. The snow — the blinding snow — was the problem. Because of it, she simply couldn’t see what she had to avoid.

If they waited long enough, perhaps the storm would pass. Yet if there was too much snow on the field then they wouldn’t be able to take off anyway. Darned if she did and darned if she didn’t and likely dead either way.

Mason had come up from the back and was looking over Cho’s shoulder. “What’s the holdup?”

“Can’t see,” Cho answered. Her tone was flat, showing none of the nervousness that was rocking her body.

“Can we wait it out?” the agent asked, his tone reflecting his complete confidence in his partner.

“What about those guys down at the monastery?” Cho asked. “You thought they’d be coming up here as soon as they heard the engines.”

“With this heavy snow,” Mason said, “I doubt if they’ll be moving.”

Maybe sitting it out was the right thing to do. Maybe they did have the time to wait. Maybe the snow wouldn’t pile up so much they’d get stuck. Maybe in this case he who hesitates would not be lost.

“Look over there,” Burke said, pointing toward the house. His voice sounded concerned.

Barot’s men had gotten out of the truck and were walking up to the front door of the house. Waiting out the storm was no longer an option.

“They’re looking to use Nassar’s place to get away from the storm,” Mason said. “Won’t take them long to realize they’ve been duped.”

The terrorists would no doubt come out of that house with guns a-blazing. Cho knew they had one shot to fly out and this was it. Though she couldn’t see much beyond the house, the time for departure was now.

After checking the gauges, she glanced at the windows to once more study the engines. They were purring and ready to go. Grabbing the throttles in her right hand and holding the wheel in her left, Cho started the plane rolling. Just as the old bird got moving, she saw a series of flashes. They’d been made. Even though she couldn’t hear them over the engine noise, guns had fired.

“Hang on!” she shouted as the DC-2 picked up speed and bounced across the field.

“They’re in the truck!” Mason hollered. “I know you know what you’re doing, but can’t you pick things up a bit?”

“We’re plowing through drifts,” Cho explained, “and the cross-wind’s not helping.”

Just as Cho finished her explanation, a round pierced the plane’s body less than three inches above her head. She was sure more would follow.
