“I’m just saying that it might be hard to get your hands on chloroform.”

Lucius

JAZMYNE

“I know! I know! I’m sorry I’m late!” I yelled as I rushed through the door. Everyone was sitting around the table, and they were all way too quiet. “What?”

“Hey, sweetheart,” Willow said with a tight smile. “Let me put your purse in the living room. Go grab yourself a glass of tea. We’re all just sitting here talking.”

I handed Willow my purse and looked around.

“Where are Atlas and Addie? They weren’t at the house. I was sure they’d be here.”

“They couldn’t stay,” Shannon said with a wave of her hand. “They had to drop off a car or something.”

“Oh, okay. Why is everyone so quiet?”

I heard Marcus sigh loudly, and when I looked at him, his face was troubled.

“Is everyone okay? Is someone hurt? Where are the kids?”

“No one’s hurt, Jazzy,” I heard Lout say from behind me. “Come with me. I want to talk to you.”

“Where are we going? We can talk here,” I told him with a laugh. “Am I in trouble?”

“We’ll see,” Marcus said as he got up and walked around the table.

When I was a kid, Lout was the one who made the rules and Marcus was the one that enforced them. Usually because Lout was out working, and Marcus was left to take care of us girls.

Lout was always so tired. We stayed quiet around him as much as we could so he could sleep. In high school, he swam competitively, kept his grades up, worked in a fast food restaurant, and stripped any time his agent could book him.

By the time he graduated, he was a zombie, but we were all fed, lived in a safe place, and were happier than we’d ever been.

When he went off to college, our lives didn’t change much except that we all missed him. Lout’s life didn’t change very much either, except he took a full course load while he lived in the dorms and worked as a stripper any time his agent could book him.

“Where are we going? Why is it just us?” I asked as we walked out into the backyard. There was a shed out there that Lout said stored his extra workout equipment. Everyone knew it was really where he went to have a quiet moment alone away from the kids. I could see that he was leading us in that direction.

Lout unlocked the door and held it open before he followed us in. Marcus hit the light switch and then stood next to Lout by the door.

“Jazzy, certain things have come to light, and we need to set some shit straight.”

“What?” I was cautious now. There was no way they could know I was leaving unless Lucius had told them. He didn’t know their phone numbers, so he would have to come to Lout’s house to warn him in person. “Oh God. Is Lucius okay? Please . . .”

“We didn’t hurt your boyfriend, Jaz.” Marcus said softly.

“Why didn’t you tell us about him?” Lout asked.
