Lucius
JAZMYNE
âI know! I know! Iâm sorry Iâm late!â I yelled as I rushed through the door. Everyone was sitting around the table, and they were all way too quiet. âWhat?â
âHey, sweetheart,â Willow said with a tight smile. âLet me put your purse in the living room. Go grab yourself a glass of tea. Weâre all just sitting here talking.â
I handed Willow my purse and looked around.
âWhere are Atlas and Addie? They werenât at the house. I was sure theyâd be here.â
âThey couldnât stay,â Shannon said with a wave of her hand. âThey had to drop off a car or something.â
âOh, okay. Why is everyone so quiet?â
I heard Marcus sigh loudly, and when I looked at him, his face was troubled.
âIs everyone okay? Is someone hurt? Where are the kids?â
âNo oneâs hurt, Jazzy,â I heard Lout say from behind me. âCome with me. I want to talk to you.â
âWhere are we going? We can talk here,â I told him with a laugh. âAm I in trouble?â
âWeâll see,â Marcus said as he got up and walked around the table.
When I was a kid, Lout was the one who made the rules and Marcus was the one that enforced them. Usually because Lout was out working, and Marcus was left to take care of us girls.
Lout was always so tired. We stayed quiet around him as much as we could so he could sleep. In high school, he swam competitively, kept his grades up, worked in a fast food restaurant, and stripped any time his agent could book him.
By the time he graduated, he was a zombie, but we were all fed, lived in a safe place, and were happier than weâd ever been.
When he went off to college, our lives didnât change much except that we all missed him. Loutâs life didnât change very much either, except he took a full course load while he lived in the dorms and worked as a stripper any time his agent could book him.
âWhere are we going? Why is it just us?â I asked as we walked out into the backyard. There was a shed out there that Lout said stored his extra workout equipment. Everyone knew it was really where he went to have a quiet moment alone away from the kids. I could see that he was leading us in that direction.
Lout unlocked the door and held it open before he followed us in. Marcus hit the light switch and then stood next to Lout by the door.
âJazzy, certain things have come to light, and we need to set some shit straight.â
âWhat?â I was cautious now. There was no way they could know I was leaving unless Lucius had told them. He didnât know their phone numbers, so he would have to come to Loutâs house to warn him in person. âOh God. Is Lucius okay? Please . . .â
âWe didnât hurt your boyfriend, Jaz.â Marcus said softly.
âWhy didnât you tell us about him?â Lout asked.
