Chapter Ten

In the days following Amity’s murder, Dina and I fell into a routine. One where we rose and shoved our emotions aside long enough to do what had to be done in preparation for our coven sister’s memorial, knowing full well that when the quiet moments came, we could have the breakdowns our souls so desperately needed. The storm of chaos that followed the events at the voodoo shop felt eerily familiar to that.

An ambulance arrived for Ruby, and the EMTs were able to get her in a stable condition before rushing her to the nearest hospital. Eldon’s bones had knitted themselves back together again, but Detective Tiresias didn’t trust him enough after his complete loss of control to release him or stick him in a holding cell with other people being detained. Out of options, we dropped him off with his pack. I say we, but I, of course, waited outside. I may not be the quickest on the uptake, but getting kicked out of the compound twice did allow the message that I wasn’t welcome there to sink in.

Sitting in the passenger side of Detective Tiresias’s sedan, I was texting an update to Reid when a buzz of activity poured out of the Red Wolf Compound. Garage doors opening, people rushing out with packed bags and coolers, bodies piling into cars and screeching down the brick driveway. I spotted Misty coming down the front steps with a duffel bag slung over her shoulder, and rolled down my window to wave her over.

She shook her head at the sight of me, yet jogged over just the same. “You’re persistent, I’ll give you that. What are you doing here?”

“You know me. If shit goes down, I somehow find myself right in the middle of it.” I nodded in the direction of the house. “What’s the hullabaloo in there?”

The she-wolf lifted one brow. “Hullabaloo?”

“I was trying it out. Just go with it.”

The salt and pepper-haired beauty swallowed hard, her intense stare trying to read my expression. “Were you with Eldon? Did you see his forced change?”

I grimaced at the gruesome memory. “I was. Won’t be forgetting that any time soon.”

Misty’s head bobbed as if simultaneously expecting that answer and loathing it. “It was one thing when someone was targeting us. But knowing they can force us to shift anytime, anywhere is another matter. Until we know who’s behind this and we can stop them, no wolf is safe. We own some land off a beach inlet where the whole pack is going to hide out for now. At least there, we have the home field advantage.” As she spoke, Connoll stepped outside the manor and strode back to the car.

Climbing into the driver’s seat, he slammed his door shut with more force than necessary. Turning the key, he fired the engine to life. “Now people being forced from their homes by this psychopath. One way or another, I’m putting a stop to this shit.”

Before Connoll could put the car in drive, Misty reached in and caught hold of my arm.
