Scott put his hand on my knee as tears began to sting my eyes.

I quickly wiped them away; I’d stopped crying about my ex-husband a long time ago.

“When I told him I was pregnant, he immediately assumed it wasn’t his. I tried to explain it to him, but he just didn’t remember the night he came home drunk…” I shook my head. “For a while, I thought about getting rid of Travis. I’m so glad I couldn’t go through with it.” I covered my mouth, choking back a sob.

Although I didn’t terminate my pregnancy, the guilt of considering it for that brief moment still haunted me.

“Don’t dwell on that. You’re an incredible mother to him.”

“When I moved back here, I had nothing but some of my clothes and a newborn. But I was determined to bounce back.”

“Where is he now?”

I shrugged. “Probably still in California. He dragged me out there once we got married because his family lives there.”

“Has he tried to make any contact?”

I shook my head. “Thankfully, no. He wasn’t there for Travis’s birth. Didn’t even sign the birth certificate. Not that I minded. I pray every morning that I never hear from him again. Still, it’s amazing how the best thing that’s ever happened to me came from the worst thing.”

Scott pulled me into his warm chest, kissing the top of my head.

“Just remember, not every man is your ex-husband.”

I smiled, patting him on his chest. “I know,” I whispered.

His fingers trailed over the buttons on my shirt. My breathing slowed as he unbuttoned them one at a time. I put my hand over his once he got halfway through them, stopping him.

“It’s nothing I haven’t seen before,” he said.
