BUNRAKU 1. The present Bunraku stage resembles that of the Kabuki, except that the hanamichi, a passegeway from the rear of the auditorium to the stage, which in the eighteenth century was an architectural feature of the doll theatre, is no longer used. The singers and samisen players are placed on the stage to the audience's right, a position they occupy in the Kabuki when plays of doll-theatre origin are performed.

BUNRAKU 2. The samisen was introduced into Japan between 1558 and 1569, having been brought from the Ryukyu islands. It was originally a bowed instrument, but a certain Nakashogi changed its construction somewhat and played it with a large plectrum. The popularity of the samisen was immediate, and it was introduced into the doll theatre as an accompaniment to the rhythmical recitation.
