The rooftop garden provided an amenity for the office workers and highlighted further building and nature relationships (Fig. 3.5 ). The garden created a green oasis in the centre of the city. The garden collapsed the foreground plantings with the distant surroundings, following conventions of Japanese garden design, but also facilitated a platform for observing the rapidly evolving urban landscape beyond.

Yamada’s project represented early conceptualization of large-scale urban buildings in landscape terms, fostering new relationships between building and nature, and creating architectural landscapes for the dynamic cityscape. Yamada foreshadowed Itsuko Hasegawa’s argument for conceiving of architecture as second nature. He also provided a precursor for Toyo Ito’s efforts to expand modernism through forms influenced by nature.
