a medley of branches

maple and loganberry

Japan is a country blessed with many deciduous and evergreen trees. In spring, the trees come into bud and shiny, crisp leaves flash around us. Branches have always been a basic component of Japanese ikebana and clearly evoke the seasons. This all-green arrangement on a table comprising a mix of early branches brings the freshness of spring indoors. The light green of the young leaves on the branches makes the viewer feel that spring is here even without the addition of colorful flowers.

Only a few branches of two kinds of trees are used in the arrangement. Two kinds of maple are placed near the bottom of the display so that they flow horizontally and give an impression of airiness. These branches alone in the pure white container are quite beautiful. By adding a loganberry branch, which stands vertically and then drifts sideways, the arrangement catches the light streaming through the window. It is a simple yet dramatic arrangement.

Here, the asymmetrically inserted branches create a dynamic structure with a wide-open space. The S-shaped flow of the branches expresses the movement of light and fresh air.
