CHAPTER NINETEEN

Now that I was alone, I could let go of my crisis-competence, and allow the shock and trepidation I’d held at bay to bubble to the surface. I sat in my car and tried to quell my rising panic.

Ty had left a voicemail saying he’d read Wes’s breaking news report, and to call him when I could, no hurry. I appreciated his patience. I wanted to talk to him, to hear his voice, but I could barely manage coherent sentences, so I held off.

I didn’t want to risk driving, either, until I felt more in control. I leaned back against the headrest and closed my eyes. My bruising was physical, but I felt emotionally drained, too, as if I’d gotten out of bed too soon after the flu.

Wes had replied to my earlier inquiry: Suspects = nada. CALL ME. NOW. I sent a message to keep him at bay: I’m bruised, but okay. Ivan was strangled with thin cotton or cotton-like rope. Horrible. What about Dutch Larkin?

I texted Zoë to ask her to come over, to keep me company for the evening.

I texted Russ, too, to arrange patrols at the house overnight, as well as at Prescott’s. I had no reason to think I was involved in whatever was going on, but my dad always told me to watch my back. Better to have guards on duty than rely solely on an alarm system someone might disable. Russ replied within a minute that he’d take care of it immediately.

As I started the engine, my phone vibrated—it was Zoë texting that she was on her way.
