The sitter is Mrs Leigh Perrot, Jane Austen’s aunt, who after five months of imprisonment in Ilchester gaol, was tried at the Somerset assizes in Taunton on 29 March 1800 for stealing a card of lace from haberdasher and milliner, Elizabeth Gregory. Mrs Leigh Perrot’s seven-hour trial is painstakingly reported in the Lady’s Magazine, in a report that lingers on the distress the ordeal occasioned the defendant and her husband. At no point does the author of the trial report give the reader room to doubt the not guilty verdict the jury came to just fifteen minutes after adjournment.
