Chapter 12

The sun hung high in the clear blue sky as Colin guided me around the perimeter of Imogen's house to the back door. The white wooden door, like most in the village, was left unlocked, allowing us easy entry. My heart raced with a mix of fear and excitement as we stepped inside.

"Is she really at the funeral home?" I whispered to Colin, my eyes darting around my surroundings. I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were intruders in someone else's life.

Colin nodded; his jaw set firmly. "Yeah, she won't be back for a while."

I followed him through the dimly lit hallway.

"Yes," Colin replied, his voice low and strained. "She should be gone for at least a couple of hours. She and Laoise are going to make arrangements for Dara's funeral."

I nodded, my eyes scanning the empty rooms around us. The house was eerily silent, like it was holding its breath in mourning. "Where do you think his office is?"

"Upstairs," Colin said, gesturing towards the staircase. "We explored most of the downstairs last time we were here and didn't come across any office, so it must be upstairs."

As we rounded the corner in the hallway, my eyes were suddenly drawn to a crumpled figure at the bottom of the stairs. It took me a moment to process what I was seeing – Imogen's body, spread out like a broken doll on the cold, hard floor.

My heart lurched in my chest and my feet froze in place, unable to move closer or look away. Colin's strong hand clasped mine, grounding me in this nightmare come to life. The air seemed to thicken with an unspoken fear, prickling my skin as a shiver raced up my spine. An eerie silence enveloped us, save for the faint sound of our own panicked breaths. Time felt suspended, as if the world had stopped spinning on its axis.

"What... what happened?" My voice trembled as I whispered the words, afraid that even a slightly louder tone might awaken the eerie silence that enveloped the house.

Colin released my hand and cautiously approached Imogen's motionless body. He knelt down beside her, his fingers gingerly checking for a pulse. His expression darkened, confirming my deepest fears.

A wave of sorrow washed over me, intermingled with a gnawing sense of unease. The realization that not only had we stumbled upon a tragic death but that danger loomed within these walls sent adrenaline surging through my veins. Instinctively, I knew we needed answers – answers that likely lay hidden in Dara's office upstairs.

However, no way on Earth was I going to step past Imogen's dead body.

"We need to call the Garda." Colin said, echoing my thoughts.

-

Sergeant Kinnerk's hands were tightly gripping the front of his belt, his knuckles turning white. He turned to me and asked, "And you were here to speak with Imogen?"

Colin and I sat on the steps outside Imogen's house, while a couple of Garda members searched through the rooms inside. Evie, the high priestess, stood beside the Sergeant in a brightly coral colored blouse and pressed slacks.
